The underlying principle of HELMUT derives from functional pragmatism. Aluminum plates are inserted into one another and connected by cylinder head screws and a central bar. However, such considerations of functionality alone are transcended by wider drivers of design, as the plainly visible connections do not only join the individual parts together but generate a total aesthetic. At the same time, the soft polypropylene straps contrast the materiality and hardness of the aluminum to make HELMUT a comfortable seating-object. © 2020
THULANI questions the possibilities of historical design to be translated into the present. THULANI reminisces upon the African Palaver chair, whose history traces back to the end of the 19th century. While the African Palaver chair is traditionally handcrafted from solid wood, THULANI, on the other hand, is machine-made from aluminum. The chair's industrial and precise appearance adapts the logic of the African Palaver chair, but projects it into the present day with contemporary resonance. The material economizes weight and gives the object its visual lightness. THULANI maintains the original historic geometry with the effect of making the chair as extremely comfortable as is its predecessor. A silicone cushion, perfectly adapted to the seat, enhances this effect. © 2020
FUDGE is both a piece of furniture and a material study. The coffee table is made of carbon concrete and measures only 11mm at its thinnest point, while spanning over 60cm. Depending on the point of view, the table appears as either a free-standing solid block or – due to its central opening and minimal material thickness – as delicate and light. © 2020
LUDWIG is not just a table with a marble slab – it is a paragon of material that is archaic and sculptural, supported and presented on an aluminum base. The slab and the base stand together in contrast of their materiality and surface aesthetics but perform as an irresistible couple. The aluminum plates are interlocked into one another and reinforced by the cross-grooved marble. The reflective quality of the aluminum draws in the surrounding environment and the plates melt to become one with its context, whereas the marble invites a person to touch and linger due to its semi-gloss mineral surface. © 2020
